For the second consecutive day, the WNBA postponed games in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc.
On Thursday afternoon at SportsCenter, WNBA President Nneka Ogwumike announced that the three WNBA games scheduled for Thursday evening will be postponed. Later, the WNBA released a statement.
Six WNBA games in total will need to be rescheduled, three from Wednesday and three from Thursday. The league has not yet released information on when this will happen.
Candlelight vigil
After the cancellation of games on Wednesday, the WNBA players got together and held a candlelight vigil in their bubble in Bradenton, Florida. Everyone has been invited to speak, and many have. Nneka Ogwumike, commissioner Cathy Engelbert, Las Vegas Aces coach Bill Laimbeer and WNBA executive committee member Layshia Clarendon all spoke and complimented the tireless social justice work of the WNBA players. Clarendon also read Maya Angelou’s famous poem “And Still I Rise”.
After the games were boycotted on Wednesday night, the whole @wnba organized bubble and attended a candlelight vigil. People were encouraged to speak from their hearts. I’m in this together. pic.twitter.com/4MZj64dBlf
