O’Sullivan continued his victories in 2001, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2013 and with the sixth title he reached the legend of the 80’s Steve Davis. The record holder in the modern era, when the tournament’s elimination system was switched, is Stephen Hendry with seven triumphs. With today’s triumph, O’Sullivan beat Hendry in the number of victories in the so-called ranking tournaments, of which he now has 37.

“I didn’t think about the title at all, I just wanted to enjoy it. It’s nice when you can live your dream,” said O’Sullivan, who was nicknamed “Rocket” during the championship. He flew the first lap against Tchepchaia Un-Nuch from Thailand in 108 minutes, thus significantly breaking the World Cup record.

The climax of the tournament did not bring nearly as dramatic a spectacle as both semifinals, which ended with the closest result of 17:16. O’Sullivan defeated three-time champion Mark Selby in it, even though he had already lost 14:16. Wilson still beat Scott McGill’s Scots, knocking out last year’s champion Judd Trump a lap earlier.

Most of the championship translated from the traditional spring term was played because of the coronavirus behind closed doors. About 300 people were allowed to reach the finals as part of the British government’s pilot program to test the safe return of fans to the stands at sporting events.
