The government supports the allocation of 350,000 euros for the organization of the European Beach Volleyball Championship in Jūrmala

Funding will be provided from the state budget program “Contingency Funds”, while at the same time reallocating appropriations to the same sub-program, including from the unused funding for the organization of international sporting events of national importance in the amount of EUR 200 330 and during emergencies. for the provision of free lunches for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students with the saved state budget funds in the amount of 149,203 euros.

According to the information provided by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Latvian Volleyball Federation has been granted the right to organize a championship in Jūrmala from September 15 to September 20 this year. The Federation has informed the Ministry of Education and Science that the costs of organizing the championship are more than 700,000 euros, which are intended to cover the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) co-financing – 200,000 euros, Jurmala City Council co-financing – 100,000 euros, and the federation co-financing – 50,000 euros, respectively the federation asked the state for another 350,000 euros.

The Latvian Volleyball Federation claims that the organization of the championship is not possible without co-financing from the state budget.

According to the information provided by the Latvian Volleyball Federation, the championship is planned as the first big event of the international beach volleyball season of 2020 after the season break, which also developed in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The championship will be the highest level beach volleyball tournament, which was already organized in Latvia in 2017, moreover, the Latvian Volleyball Federation in Jurmala has been organizing European and world level beach volleyball competitions since 2014, the ministry emphasized.

It is planned that in Latvia, the leading 32 male and female European volleyball duos – a total of 64 teams – will compete for the title of European champion. According to the federation, in this level tournament in Latvia it will be possible to see the highest level beach volleyball stars in the world, as well as all the best Latvian beach volleyball athletes, of which two teams (Mārtiņš Pļaviņš and Edgars Točs, as well as Tīna Graudiņa and Anastasija Kravčenoka) have already provided participation in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, but Alexander Samoilov and Jānis Šmēdiņš have a real chance to do it in this championship.

The Ministry of Education and Science pointed out that six beach volleyball courts – four playgrounds and two warm-up courts – would be created especially for the championship in the center of Jūrmala, moreover, the final games are planned in the central stadium, which will be built for more than 3,000 spectators.

In accordance with the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, funds from the program “Contingency Funds” are allocated for measures of special national importance, unforeseen expenses in the state basic budget appropriations for prevention of disasters and natural disasters and compensation for losses caused by them and other contingencies.

In the opinion of the Ministry of Education and Science, the organization of this championship can be classified both as an unforeseen event and as an event of special national importance. This would be an unforeseen event, as the federation was offered to host the championship because the Netherlands refused to hold the competition due to the spread of the Covid-19 infection.

On the other hand, it can be qualified as a nationally important event, as the championship is the highest level of beach volleyball competitions, which are widely broadcast on several important European and world sports television channels and digital media. It is also pointed out that the Sports Policy Guidelines for 2014-2020 recognize that the organization of international sports competitions in Latvia promotes economic development, as well as promotes Latvia’s recognition in the world.

The Ministry of Education and Science pointed out that international practice shows that large-scale sports events promote the country’s international recognition, as well as help to create a competitive national identity.
