The ban on PSG shirts in Marseille overturned

The ban for Paris Saint-Germain supporters from wearing their club’s jersey in Marseille city center during Sunday’s Champions League final has been lifted, This was announced by the Marseille police on Fridays.

The ban was introduced after unrest broke out in the city during PSG’s 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

L’Equipe reported that Marseille ultras patrolled the city’s old port district and threatened PSG fans, arresting a man.

Marseille police said in a statement that the ban was put in place to protect PSG fans, but was overturned due to the “misunderstanding caused by the decree”.

The rivalry between Marseille and PSG is known as “The classic” and regarded as the largest in the country.

Marseille are the only French side to win the Champions League in 1993, but PSG have a chance to win the competition when they face Bayern Munich in the final on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Paris officials said the Champs Elysee boulevard will be pedestrianized on Sunday and wearing face masks will be mandatory on the eve of the game.

Police made 36 arrests in the capital as thousands of people poured into the famous boulevard on Tuesday night to celebrate the Ligue 1 champions reaching the final in Lisbon.

Few wore protective face clothing despite a spike in coronavirus infections in France, while even the bars were crowded as people watched the game, raising concerns about social distancing.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said police will be deployed on the Champs Elysee and in the area around PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium on Sunday night.

“I ask everyone to act responsibly to ensure [the event] it can be an expression of joy and not a source of trouble for Parisians, ”Darmanin said in television comments.

He also added that they will distribute face masks to anyone who does not wear one and announced that 17 metro stations in Paris will be closed on Sunday evening.

PSG captain Thiago Silva and coach Thomas Tuchel urged fans to be careful in a video on Twitter.

On Friday, the French health ministry reported 4,586 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, after the country hit a post-lockout record the previous day.
