Shortly before the finish of the Dauphiné tour, the professional cyclists hit a hailstorm. “The whole street was white,” reports the German Tony Martin, who escapes under an air mattress. Others pull through. With painful consequences.
HHeavy hail gave some of the professionals on the Dauphiné tour an unforeseen and at the same time painful end to the second stage and almost brought it to the end of the race.
“It started to hail about 1000 meters from the finish. I still thought I would get through. But 500 meters from the finish the grains got bigger and bigger, the whole road was white. I couldn’t go on ”, reported Tony Martin, whose Slovenian Jumbo Visma teammate Primoz Roglic won the mountain finish on Thursday on the Col de Porte, at“ radsportnews.com ”.
“A boy first gave me an inflatable mattress for protection. As it got worse, we all took shelter under a tree. As a result, I missed the waiting period, but the jury was generous because of the storm and extended the range, ”added the four-time world time trial champion. The top drivers such as stage winner Roglic or Emanuel Buchmann from Ravensburg, who was third on the day, were already at the finish line at the time of the hailstorm and were safely in the team buses.
“As if the legs hadn’t hurt enough already”
“If the stage at Critérium du Dauphiné isn’t tough enough. I love my job, ”wrote André Greipel, who was also hit by the hail, under a photo on Facebook that shows him with a contorted face in the middle of the hail.
“As if his legs hadn’t already hurt enough,” wrote the Belgian Tim Declercq and posted a picture of his bruised back in his Instagram story.
