Stengs resumes group training at AZ in the run-up to CL qualifying match | NOW

Calvin Stengs resumed group training at AZ on Monday. The 21-year-old attacker hopes to be fit in time for the duel with Viktoria Plzen in the second heat of the Champions League.

Stengs missed the entire preparation of the Alkmaarders so far because of a muscle injury. Without the attacker, exhibition matches with KRC Genk, FC Utrecht, PEC Zwolle and AS Monaco were lost and Lille was won.

On Thursday, AZ will play a practice match against Fortuna Sittard. That game seems to come too early for Stengs, although AZ coach Arne Slot stated that that should not be a problem.

“Calvin is a player who, with his basic level, can do surprising and decisive things in the field without proper preparation”, said the coach of the Alkmaarders on Saturday after the 2-0 defeat against Monaco.

The game between AZ and Viktoria Plzen will be played on August 26 in Alkmaar. Because the lighting installation of the AFAS Stadium is not yet working properly, the kick-off starts at 4.30 pm.

Due to the busy schedule after the corona break, all confrontations in the second heat of the Champions League are about one match.
