Schachmann after car accident: “Can I drive over a pothole without crying?” | Tour

In the final of Lombardy, Maximilian Schachmann stumbled upon a car driven by an ignorant woman. The German broke his collarbone and was sidelined for a while.

“I suspect that it is very unlikely that I will ride the Tour. At the Tour start on August 29, the fracture will certainly not be healed,” said 26-year-old Schachmann.

The clavicle fracture is initially treated “conservatively”. After additional research, it will be determined whether an operation is nevertheless necessary.

“We will have to see how the pain develops”, says the German champion, who finished 7th in the Tour of Lombardy.

“Can I steer without restrictions and can I drive over a hole in the road without crying? Or does it still hurt a lot when I hold a drinking bottle?”

The International Cycling Union UCI is investigating the incident with Schachmann and is considering a complaint against organizer RCS Sports. “WorldTour races should have completely closed roads at all times,” it said on Saturday.
