Protests against unfair presidential elections continue in Minsk and other major Belarusian cities.
There is a possibility that Belarus could lose the honor of hosting the World Cup. If that happens, Russia would be ready to organize a tournament together with Latvia.
“We remember that the 2014 World Cup in Minsk was one of the best, but no one now knows what will happen in Belarus. No one knew that such a situation would develop in that country,” Tretyak told R-Sport.
In Belarus it is planned to organize group tournaments, playoffs, including fights for medals.
“Whatever it is, Russia is always ready to host the world championship if the need arises. But for now, we stick to the fact that the tournament will be organized by Latvia and Belarus, as originally planned,” Tretyak said.
The 2020 World Cup was scheduled for Switzerland, but was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
