Pirlo replaces Sarri as Juventus coach

Andrea Pirlo, world champion with the Italian national team in 2006, was designated this Saturday as new Juventus coach, just a few hours after the announcement of the dismissal of Maurizio Sarri.

Pirlo, who is now 41 years old and as a footballer he wore the colors of Juventus in four seasons (2011-2015), he has no coaching experience. Just ten days ago he was appointed coach of the Juventus U23 team. His appointment comes less than 24 hours after Juventus’ painful elimination against Lyon in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

“During his four seasons in the Juventus midfield, Pirlo won as many ‘Scudetti’ (Italian Serie A titles), a Cup and two Super Cups. Today begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football: from teacher to coach, “Juventus wrote in their statement.

“Starting today it will be for the Juventine people ‘Il Mister’ because the club decided to entrust him with the technical direction of the first team, after having already chosen him for Juventus U23,” said the Piedmontese club. “The decision is made on the conviction that Pirlo has everything necessary to lead, since his debut on the bench, an experienced and talented team, to obtain new successes,” explained the Bianconero team.

The Champions as an obsession

Juventus has nine consecutive titles in the Italian league. Winning the ‘Scudetto’ this season was not enough for Maurizio Sarri to continue, after the great disappointment of the elimination against Lyon in the Champions League.

Sarri has only lasted one season in the position, after replacing Massimiliano Allegri, who had spent five years as the team’s coach.

The European title is the great obsession of Juventus, which has not won it since 1996. In 2018 it hired Cristiano Ronaldo, five times winner of the Champions League but who has not been able to guide the Turinese towards the ‘orejona’ in his first two courses in Italy
