Pac-12 postpones the fall sport and watches the return of spring

The Pac-12 CEO group unanimously voted Tuesday to postpone the fall sport until the end of the year and will consider options for the game in the spring, the conference said.

“The health, safety and well-being of our student athletes and all those involved in Pac-12 sports have been a top priority since this current crisis began,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “Our student athletes, fans, staff and everyone who loves college sports would have loved to see the season play out as originally planned this calendar year, and we know how disappointing this is.”

Affected Pac-12 student athletes will continue to receive guaranteed scholarships. The conference also encourages the NCAA to give an additional year of scholarship to students who do not wish to play this academic year.

Last month, following the same decision by the Big Ten, the Pac-12 announced it would continue with a conference-only football schedule from September 26th. The Pac-12’s decision to cancel the fall schedule again on Tuesday follows again the same decision by the Big Ten, who announced they would cancel the fall sport about an hour after the Pac-12 CEO group met.

The CEO group consists of a Chancellor or President of each of the conference’s 12 universities and is the ultimate decision maker for the Pac-12.
