Newcastle are about to sign Arsenal defender Rob Holding on a seasonal loan

Newcastle are leading the race to sign Arsenal defender Rob Holding on loan for the season.

The 24-year-old has had a number of clubs keeping an eye on his services for the year, but the Magpies appear to have won.

Holding has yet to agree personal terms with the Northeast group and a deal with the Gunners has yet to be concluded.

Arsenal are currently short on defensive options, which means the former Bolton will likely be included in their Community Shield squad.

Mikel Arteta is currently without David Luiz and Sokratis, who are in quarantine, and Shkodran Mustafi, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers who are all absent due to injury.

Rob Holding will leave Arsenal on loan

It means Holding is likely to play for the Gunners again before they sanction a move on loan elsewhere, Athletic reports.

Injuries ruined his career in the Emirates after moving four years ago.

Holding has only been able to make 18 Premier League appearances in the past two seasons.

Newcastle are also interested in a man who once wore Arsenal colors to Aaron Ramsey.

Steve Bruce has yet to sign a big deal this summer

The Welshman left north London last summer on a free transfer and joined the Italian giants Juventus, but didn’t have the year he would have predicted.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira understands that the 29-year-old is interested in Steve Bruce but has turned down the chance to return to the Premier League.

But Ramsey’s gigantic salaries make a move particularly complicated.

Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports Italia said: “I think Aaron Ramsey will stay.

“He has a lot of money, with a good contract, so it would be difficult to find another solution.

“Besides, I think that’s not what Juventus wants to sell.”
