Meanwhile, defender Phil Jones has been barred from this week’s Europa League tournament for working on a troubling knee injury.

Jones was originally named to United’s 30-man squad for the Europe finals, but will now stay home to continue an individual fitness program at the club’s Carrington training ground.

The 28-year-old England international has not played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since January using defensive alternatives Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe.

An operation has also been considered, but the club is currently trying to manage it without surgery as it would keep the player out until January.

‘Jonah has had a tough season with problems. He had problems with his knees, ‘said coach Old Gunnar Solskjaer. “He’s dedicated, he’s worked hard, but sometimes your body tells you.”

The rest of United’s players will fly to Cologne on Sunday for the completion of the Europa League competition which has been delayed by the lockout. They face FC Copenhagen in the quarter-finals on Monday.
