Graeme Souness believes Manchester United should avoid spending £ 100m on Jadon Sancho this summer and instead strengthen in other areas.

Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified Borussia Dortmund and English striker Sancho as his main summer target.

While Dortmund insist the 20-year-old is not up for sale, Manchester United remain interested in securing his signature in a move that could cost more than £ 100m.

Premier League legend Souness believes that Sancho’s signing shouldn’t be Solskjaer’s priority, however, and says the Manchester United manager must instead strengthen his squad in other areas.

The Red Devils enjoyed a splendid second half of the season by finishing third in the Premier League and taking on Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals on Sunday night.

Souness told The Times: “ It looks like Manchester United will have to spend the better part of £ 100m to get Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in this window and I’m not sure it’s their priority.

“There are other places they need to strengthen because Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford can score in any company.”

Souness was particularly complimented by teenage forward Greenwood, who has enjoyed an important season at Old Trafford, scoring 18 goals in all competitions.

“Greenwood has everything he needs for him,” added Souness.

‘His age, athleticism, technique and that sixth sense that the best have. He catches the ball early and hits it beautifully.

If you look at many of Lionel Messi’s goals, you see the game unfold and the goalkeeper prepares and then the ball is at the bottom of his net and he hasn’t moved because Messi catches him so early.

‘I’m not saying Greenwood is in Messi’s class, it’s very early to call him, but he looks better than Martial and Rashford when it comes to that sixth sense and should get more goals than them over the course of his career.

‘It will make goalkeepers work harder by hitting the target with more shots.

“We don’t have to fall into the trap of getting too big, too soon on a guy who came on the scene this year, but he has huge potential and looks like a good guy too.”
