Jürgen Klopp has taken the blame for Rhian Brewster’s costly penalty against Arsenal in the Community Shield.

Brewster got into the game in just a few moments, then hit the bar to give Arsenal a shooting advantage the Gunners never gave up.

Liverpool fans have high hopes for Brewster and the player was visibly disappointed in missing the crucial penalty but Klopp insisted the striker was not to blame.

“It won’t hurt Rhian,” said the Liverpool head coach. “If someone is to blame, it’s me.

“I wanted him in that position because he’s a real finisher and he’s confident. Not today. That happens in life and in football.

“We all have to learn and prove that we can handle defeat. If he had hit and someone else was missing, it’s the same topic.

‘There are bigger reasons than that. It’s possible to miss it like this. I’ve never seen him miss one, but it happens. ‘

Liverpool players, including Curtis Jones, comforted Brewster when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot past Alisson to score Arsenal’s fifth penalty and doomed Liverpool.

It’s the second straight year Liverpool have lost the Community Shield on penalties and Klopp admitted it was a “sad” day for the reigning Premier League champions.

“Today I was sad,” said Klopp after the game.

“When you play against a formation like this – which has pretty much always happened to us, not just when we lost 1-0, even if it was 0-0, many teams play like that – then you have to be in the final third really fresh.

“Sometimes you want to force it, create angles, create crosses, follow after, all these things. The rhythm for it fell a little.

“We couldn’t get exactly the chance we wanted, but we had two of them and the third one that we scored with.

‘Against a team with the quality of Arsenal it has to be enough on some days.

“When you’re done, that’s enough. If you don’t get it ready, it’s not enough and today wasn’t enough. ‘
