Jarrett Stidham’s hip injury ends Patriots’ QB competition

The so-called Patriots quarterback competition, if there really was one, may be over now.

Jarrett Stidham will be out for a few weeks with a hip injury, NFL Network reported, making it almost a certainty that Cam Newton will be Bill Belichick’s quarterback.

ESPN reported that Stidham, 24, had his leg examined Thursday at a nearby hospital and the tests came back negative.

Newton, the former Panther who signed with New England at the end of June, being the Patriots starter was also seen as a probability given his work as a former MVP and three-time Pro Bowler. Stidham, meanwhile, threw a grand total of four assists in the NFL. Now he is even further behind.

Newton, 31, suffered multiple injuries throughout his nine-year career, including an ankle injury that has persisted since college and was surgically repaired in 2014, concussions, a rotator cuff torn on his shoulder that required surgery twice and, most recently, a Lisfranc fracture he suffered in the third preseason game in 2019. But he’s been looking good so far.

“He’s definitely a former MVP for a reason. The guy is a professional. He works his tail. He’s extremely dynamic and he has a charming personality, ”Julian Edelman said of Newton on WEEI Sports Radio. “It was fun to be there. He has confidence in himself. Every quarterback has confidence, but it’s just a little different with Cam. It’s a vibe that can feel and put you in a state of mind. “
