A former Nerazzurri player is confident his old club will beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at the continental trophy
Manchester United are only the third best team left in the Europa League, according to Andreas Brehme, who thinks Inter and Bayer Leverkusen are “stronger” than the Red Devils.
United are on track to win their first piece of great silverware since 2017 after completing a two-legged win over LASK last week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men beat the Austrian side at Old Trafford to advance to the Europa League quarter-finals 7-1 overall, and will now face Copenhagen for a place in the last four.
The Red Devils could clash in the final against the Italian giants Inter Milan if they continue to win, with a clash against Bundesliga Leverkusen for Antonio Conte’s team.
Ahead of the two games scheduled for Monday in Germany, Brehme expressed his belief that Nezarurri will win the competition if they manage to overtake Peter Bosz’s side.
The former Inter Milan full-back says Leverkusen are a more formidable opponent than United, who expected to live up to the key event later this month.
“I have no doubts, for me it’s Inter,” said Brehme Gazzetta dello Sport. The Nerazzurri are a great team, even if Bayer Leverkusen are strong and have an excellent striker like Havertz, but Conte’s squad has the advantage.
“I would say that whoever wins this match has a great chance of raising the Europa League [trophy]. The semifinal against Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel is winnable.
“On the other side of the group, I believe Manchester United will qualify for the finals. But both Inter and Bayer are stronger than the English club.”
After seeing United’s 2-1 win over LASK last time around, club legend Paul Scholes warned Solskjaer that Romelu Lukaku will be motivated to help Inter Milan outdo their former employers if the two teams they will meet in the final.
The winner of the highs said BT Sport: “This Europa League is a great opportunity for them now.
“There are some decent teams left, you can’t dismiss players like Sevilla, who have won three times at a trot in one stage.
Roma will obviously have quality, the Italian teams are always difficult to face.
“But the biggest threat for me for Man Utd winning this Europa League is Inter, I think together with United they are the best team.
