All is well that ends well for Jon Rahm. But not without a lot of drama and a little anguish. The 25-year-old Spaniard had shot the low round of the BMW championship through 54 holes, a four-under 66 on Saturday at the tough Olympia Fields. However, it did include a penalty shot that had to be given later somehow forgetting to mark his ball when the fifth green picked it up.
“I just hope I don’t lose by one,” Rahm said after his round on Saturday, sitting three behind Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama with 18 holes remaining. “I’m just going to say it. I just hope. And if I do, well, very well it’s my fault. It’s that simple.”
Rahm then tried to make sure the mental error didn’t cost him the tournament, pulling an even lower 6-under 64 on Sunday, but when Johnson hit the 18th hole to equal Rahm’s four-under 276 total, the pair went to the playoffs. Indeed, the one stroke penalty made a difference in terms of Rahm winning the title in the rules.
But Rahm then hit a 66-foot birdie on the first hole of the playoffs to beat Johnson in overtime, claiming his fifth career PGA Tour title.
With the win, Rahm took first prize money of $ 1.71 million from the total purse of $ 9.5 million.
