FedEx Cup Playoffs Explained: Updated Standings, Point Format and More to Know About the 2020 Golf Championship

The 2019-20 PGA Tour is coming home.

Only two events remain in the COVID-19 abbreviated PGA Tour season: the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship, otherwise known as the FedEx Cup playoffs, how golf determines its champion for a given season. All 125 golfers on the starting course receive a one-year PGA Tour exemption; winners of one of the first two playoff events receive a two-year exemption; and the overall winner receives a five-year exemption.

That said, not everyone made it through the first playoff event, The Northern Trust; the field was reduced from 125 to 70 for the BMW championship. It will be further reduced to 30 for the Tour Championship. This way, only the best golfers on the planet will have the opportunity to win the highest prize on the PGA Tour.

Here’s everything you need to know about FedExCup 2020, including rankings, point rules and formats, schedules and payouts:

How do the FedEx Cup playoffs work?

The regular season of the PGA Tour leads to the FedEx Cup playoffs, with each official event awarding points to golfers who have reached 36 holes for a given tournament. The top 125 golfers earned in points at the end of the regular season (the Wyndham Championship) are eligible to participate in the playoffs.

The playoffs begin with The Northern Trust, with players aiming to make it through the weekend cut so they can earn additional FedEx Cup points. Even those golfers who fail to make the cut, however, can still advance as long as they finish between the top 70 golfers in combined FedEx Cup points from the regular season and Northern Trust. From there, the FedEx Cup moves on to the BMW Championship, which allows all participants to play through the entire four-round tournament. Only the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup leaderboard can advance to the final event of the season – the Tour Championship.

The ultimate goal is to win the Tour Championship, which not only brings huge profits, but also provides an exemption from the PGA Tour for the next five seasons. That player also has the right to brag as player of the year for that year.

FedEx Cup points system

Each official PGA Tour event awards points to players who have made at least the 36-hole cut in a given tournament. Winners of regular PGA Tour events earn 500 FedEx Cup points; winners in any of the four majors or players win 600 points; the winners of the golf world championships earn 550 points. For any PGA Tour event played in front of the WGC or the majors, the winner earns 300 points.

Once in the playoffs, potential points earned are increased by a factor of three, meaning the winner of one of the first two playoff events will win. 1,500 FedEx Cup points, instead of 500 (PGA Tour officials reduced the 2020 playoffs from a factor of four to a factor of three due to the shortened season of COVID-19). Points earned in these events are added to a player’s regular season tally, with the field for subsequent playoff events (top 70 for the BMW Championship, top 30 for the Tour Championship) determined based on combined points.

(A full breakdown of playoff point distributions is available here).

The Tour Championship clears the list in terms of FedEx Cup rankings. That said, the Tour in 2019 introduced a handicap model that gives higher-seeded golfers a significant advantage over other competitors at the start of the tournament. The player with the highest score at the end of the Tour Championship, including handicaps, is named champion.

FedEx Cup playoff schedule

The Northern Trust

  • At your place: August 20-24
  • Winner: Dustin Johnson
  • Course: TPC Boston
  • Position: Norton, Mass.

Johnson won the tournament on Sunday with a below average performance of 30, bringing him to 1,500 FedEx points and taking him to the top of the leaderboard.

BMW Championship

  • At your place: 27-30 August
  • Course: Olympia Fields Country Club
  • Position: Olympia Fields, Ill.

The BMW Championship, formerly known as the Western Open, is the penultimate FedEx Cup tournament, with the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup leaderboard (including draws) as determined by the Northern Trust. This event is distinct in that it does not feature a 36-hole cut; all 70+ invited players play throughout the entire four-round event, with only the top 30 players on the FedEx Cup leaderboard making it to the Tour Championship.

  • Course: East Lake Golf Course

Below is the complete handicap system:
