Elise Mertens (WTA-23) has qualified for the second round of the WTA tournament in Prague ($ 202,250). Our compatriot defeated the Italian Jasmine Paolini (WTA-95) on the clay court in the Czech capital in three sets. It became 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 after 2 hours 43 minutes.
The 24-year-old Mertens is the third seed in Prague. She had already beaten her Italian peer in 2018 in the Fed Cup.
The game was initially scheduled on Monday, but had to be postponed due to rain.
In the 1 / 8th finals, Mertens will again face an Italian player, this time against Camila Giorgi (WTA-71). In the first round she settled with the Ukrainian qualifier Marta Kostjoek (WTA-140) in 3 sets: 4-6, 6-2 and 7-6.
Last week, Elise Mertens was eliminated in the first round in Palermo, where the first WTA tournament since the corona break was scheduled.
