Due to the repeated outbreak of Covid-19, the planned tennis tournament in Madrid has been canceled

It has already been reported that the Madrid regional government has recommended canceling the tournament scheduled for next month in the Spanish capital, expressing concern about the re-emergence of Covid-19.

The women’s and men’s tournament in Madrid was originally scheduled for May, but due to the rapid spread of Covid-19, it was later postponed to September. On Tuesday it became known that the prestigious clay tournament will not take place this year.

“Taking into account the recommendations of the local government and also medical experts, as well as evaluating the development of the situation in recent months, due to the difficult situation, we were forced to cancel the tournament,” the organizers said in a statement.

“Following the Covid-19 outbreaks in recent days, the Madrid government has imposed new restrictions on social exclusion. The new rules stipulate that no more than ten people may gather together.”

The tournament in Madrid would have opened the clay season in Europe after the US Open.

Participation in the Madrid “Masters 1000” tournament had already been confirmed by the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The first official tennis tournament after a five-month break is taking place in Palermo this week. Only ladies are active in the tournament in Italy.

Last year, Novak Djokovic celebrated the victory in the men’s competition, but Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands proved to be the best among the ladies.
