Date of the AFL trading period 2020, draft, free agency window

The AFL will be pushing a conventional trade and free trade period starting October 23rd in preparation for the craziest off-season player exchange in history.

The league is planning a conventional 10-day trading period as well as a free agency period beginning on the Friday after this year’s delayed Grand Final.

Unless the grand finale is delayed from the scheduled October 17th, the free agency will begin on October 23rd, followed by the trading period on Monday October 26th.

This trading period will continue until the following Wednesday, November 4th, with another nightly end of the trading period expected.

Last year the free agency lasted 13 days, with the last three days reserved for the clubs to fulfill the bids.

This means that the league’s trading period will overlap with the Melbourne Spring Carnival. Flemington’s Melbourne Cup is scheduled for November 3rd.

If the grand finale is delayed, the league will simply push back those dates as many weeks as they need.

The AFL’s national draft is not set in stone, but is expected to take place in early December. The 12th grade exams mean he cannot be brought forward as the league requires students to finish school before they are selected.

There are still around 350 players without a contract, with the clubs not yet having received an updated total number of player payments for the 2021 season.

With AFL clubs becoming increasingly optimistic about their finances, AFLPA stands firm that it was not given a good reason to lower the salary cap of $ 13.273 million plus $ 1.194 million for additional service (marketing) agreements.

Some of the AFL’s senior statesmen have only six or seven weeks to prove themselves as clubs consider whether to make list cuts when the league cuts the number of lists.
