EAGAN, Minnesota – Negotiations over a contract extension between running back Dalvin Cook and the Minnesota Vikings are at an impasse, multiple league sources told ESPN.
Unless there is a change, Cook, 25, is set to play the final year of his $ 1.33 million rookie contract.
Minnesota was planning an extension being finalized before official practices began last week. After failing to strike a deal at the meeting with Cook’s representation in the Twin Cities region on Saturday, the Vikings intended to complete negotiations before the third day of padded practices.
With no deal in place, the Vikings are choosing to suspend negotiations for the time being, according to several sources.
Cook showed up to training camp on time on July 28 and has attended all meetings and practices to date. Without overtime, the running back limited himself to individual drills on the first day of padded practice on Monday and saw an increase in his workload during the team portion on Tuesday. Cook is expected to be deep into the practices going forward.
Sources say the Vikings have not withdrawn their offer from Cook, but have no plans to enter into further negotiations at this point. If the running back decides to play the final year of his current contract, then Minnesota will have the option of placing the franchise tag on him during the 2021 offseason.
Cook was one of the league’s most productive running backs last season, recording the second-most scrimmage yards per game and leading the NFL with 11.3 yards after the catch while recording a first try on 40.6% of his targets, which was the third highest score of any running back with at least 30 targets, according to ESPN Stats & Information data.
In June, Cook’s camp said the Vikings running back would resist all future team activity until he got a “reasonable” deal. Last week, the running back dismissed the idea that he had no plans to show up.
