Dallas Goedert injury: Eagles tight end facing thumb problem

The Philadelphia Eagles have been rather vague about their injury situation since being cleared at this time of year. However, thanks to media reports, we have more information than the team provides.

Regarding the “upper body injuries” that Dallas Goedert faces, NFL Insider Tom Pelissero reports that the tight end “suffered a hairline fracture in one of his thumbs in practice this week.” He also adds that Goedert “could be back with a splint as early as next week.”

While it’s good to see that Goedert’s injury isn’t more serious, it’s not great that his pass-catching hands are damaged. And there’s no need to rush Goedert onto the pitch at camp. You just need to bring it as close as possible to 100% as it can be for week 1.

That said, the Eagles are looking thin at the tight end in the camp right now. Zach Ertz also missed Friday’s practice due to an upper body injury and has been described as day to day. Undrafted rookie free agent Noah Togiai suffered a foot injury in today’s practice and could be embarrassed. Josh Perkins and Caleb Wilson are the only two tight ends we know to be healthy.

The Eagles might need to add another training body at the tight end. Alex Ellis is unfortunately not an option, as he recently signed with the New England Patriots. The Eagles may be looking to bring Scott Orndoff back since he spent time on the practice squad last year and has some level of familiarity with offense.

Hopefully Goedert’s thumb won’t be a problem in the regular season.
