Cycling – Buchmann falls, Kämna wins stage – sport

Serious falls overshadowed the Tour of Lombardy and the Critérium du Dauphiné stage race on Saturday. In France, the German tour hope Emanuel Buchmann was affected, the 27-year-old had to be taken to a hospital with deep abrasions. Two weeks before the start of the tour, there was initially no more detailed information on the state of health of the Bora-hansgrohe driver, whose team-mate Lennard Kämna surprisingly celebrated the stage win and thus the first major success of his career.

In Italy, cycling prodigy Remco Evenepoel fell violently. The 20-year-old Belgian collided with a small wall on a descent, overturned and fell down a slope. According to his Deceuninck-Quick-Step team, Evenepoel was then taken by ambulance to a hospital in Como. He is conscious and will be examined further. According to the Italian news agency Ansa, team spokesman Alessandro Tregner said: “Remco has suffered severe trauma to his right leg, but he has never lost consciousness and has been able to answer all the doctor’s questions.”

Another shocking moment on the Lombardy tour was a collision between the German champion Maximilian Schachmann shortly before the finish with a car that had no business on the route. The 26-year-old Bora-hansgrohe rider, who broke his collarbone, was able to get back on his bike after the collision and complete the tour. He finished seventh, 4:31 minutes behind. “After such a tough race,” he prefers a cold beer on the bus instead of warm water in the ambulance, wrote Schachmann under a picture on Instagram that shows him smiling while being treated. The winner after 231 kilometers was the Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Astana Pro Team). Evenepoel took to the track as one of the favorites. In his home country, the young star is already being compared with the cycling icon Eddy Merckx. He recently won the Tour of Poland, which began on the first day with the heavy fall of Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen. The sprinter was put into an artificial coma and had to be operated on for over five hours.

In the Dauphiné destination Megève, there were mixed feelings on Saturday. “I’m super proud. It’s a really big thing for me,” said Kämna, 23, who finished 41 seconds ahead of Spaniard David de la Cruz after 4:27:56 hours at Eurosport. Because of Buchmann’s fall, the day was “bittersweet. I hope for the best that he will get better soon.” Enrico Poitschke, the team’s sporting director, said: “Difficult day and mixed feelings for us. What Lennard has shown is great, an impressive victory.” The falls of Buchmann and his teammate Gregor Mühlberger are “bitter”.

According to the organizers, the 27-year-old Buchmann fell after 29 kilometers on a descent from the Col de Plan Bois. He had previously been in third place in the overall standings. The Austrian Mühlberger and the Dutch Steven Kruijswijk also gave up the tour on the penultimate stage. “In the descent, after the group was gone, we were actually well positioned in the field, but the asphalt was slippery and there was a fall,” said Poitschke. “Some drivers went down in front of Emu and Gregor and they couldn’t evade. Both had to go to the hospital and we hope for the best.”
