Corona cases in football: quarantine instead of qualification

NEven before the best club teams in Europe play the final tournament of the current Champions League season in Lisbon, the corona pandemic will have an impact on the upcoming round of the world’s most important football club competition. The European Football Union (Uefa) announced on Tuesday that the qualifying game against FC Linfield from Northern Ireland was canceled due to the illnesses of several players from Kosovar champions KF Drita Gjilan.

The team was quarantined by the Swiss health authorities. Originally, it was supposed to play against the Northern Irish on Tuesday evening on the sports field at the Uefa headquarters in Nyon in Switzerland as part of the tournament preceding the first Champions League qualifying round.

On Monday, a second player tested positive for the virus as part of the series of tests planned by Uefa, the association said. Another player had already tested positive on the Friday before the game against Inter Club d’Escaldes from Andorra.

The winner of the qualifying tournament in Nyon is due to play against Polish champions Legia Warsaw next week. The Uefa regulations stipulate that the games are played in their competitions, provided that thirteen players can compete – unless the health authorities impose quarantine on the teams.
