When the son of a top athlete starts competing in the same sport, unfair expectations are a given. The results, at least of the kind that Charlie Woods has been producing in recent times, are much more difficult to achieve.
While Tiger Woods competes in the FedEx Cup, Charlie has been busy dominating the South Florida junior golf circuit.
Two weeks after winning a nine-hole US Kids event for five shots thanks to a 33-under-par three, 11-year-old Charlie finished in the red figures again on Saturday. This time, he won his 9-11 age division by three shots in a PGA South Florida section tournament. Here’s a look at the ranking:
So they are streak wins with eight combined hits. Not too run down.
Tiger has been spotted caddy for Charlie a couple of times in the past year. It will play this weekend, however, at the Northern Trust, the opening event of the PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoffs.
In a recent interview during the filming of the second season of Tiger’s “My Game” video series on Golf Digest Schools and GOLFTV, Woods said this about Charlie’s game:
“I’m still winning … for now,” Woods said. “He’s starting to do that. Begin to understand how to play. He’s asking me the right questions. I kept him competitive with his par, so it was just a blast to go out and be with him. It reminds me so much of my father and me [growing up]. “
Woods was then asked if he thinks his son can beat some of his records.
“I don’t know. It depends on how much he wants it. It all depends on him. I wanted him very, very soon. I wanted to compete and play this game. It depends on him, whether he wants it or not.”
Charlie actually made it to three-under on Saturday before hitting his last two holes. So the boy still has a lot to work on. It also has a lot of time. Again, he’s only 11 years old.
