Cam Newton, who appears to be the competition leader for the New England Patriots starting quarterback, was nowhere to be found in practice Monday.

Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer and Brian Lewerke went their separate ways on Monday morning when Newton was not in attendance, for reasons unknown. It was the first practice Newton has missed since training camp sessions were opened to the media.

Bill Belichick spoke on Monday morning and did not indicate that Newton would not be in practice.

Asked about the appointment of a starting quarterback, Belichick was terse: “When we’re ready to do it, we’ll do it.”
