ATLANTA (AP) – Dansby Swanson hit a homer with two outs and two runs at the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a four-run rally that gave the Atlanta Braves a stunning 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday night.
With the Braves trailing 6-3 against Washington closer to Daniel Hudson (1-2), Adam Duvall brought it to a close by hitting a two-run shot that just crossed the wall on the left field. Johan Camargo followed with a single but Hudson withdrew the next two hitters to put the Braves in their final out.
It never came.
Swanson drove one over the wall in the center right for the game winner.
The rally ruined a memorable night for Washington rookie Luis Garcia, who became the first player born in the 2000s to hit a big league homer. The youngest player in the majors at the age of 20, Garcia hit a two-run shot from Touki Toussaint in the second inning.
Asdrubal Cabrera, Juan Soto and Eric Thames also made a homer for the reigning World Series champions, but it wasn’t enough.
PARENTS 14, RANGERS 4
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Fernando Tatis Jr. has gone home twice, including a grand slam for his 11th place at the top of the major league, and San Diego defeated Texas to stop a five-game losing slip.
Tatis had seven career-record RBI. Zach Davies (3-2) conceded three points with six strikeouts in more than five innings.
Jurickson Profar had a two-run brace in a five-run second inning. Jake Cronenworth, Josh Naylor and Trent Grisham had the other RBI hits in the second against Jordan Lyles.
Austin Hedges linked to his second homer, a solo shot in the fourth, as the Padres set their season’s peak for racing.
Rougned Odor finished Davies’ closing offer in the fourth with a double of two runs, and Joey Gallo added a double RBI in the sixth.
Lyles (1-2) gave up seven strokes and seven points, six earned, in four innings.
CARDINALS 3, CUBES 1; CUB 5, CARDINALS 4
CHICAGO (AP) – David Bote hit a three-run homer in Chicago’s sixth inning of four runs, and the Cubs beat St. Louis to a doubleheader split.
With two eliminations and runners on the corners, Bote put Chicago in the lead to stay with a huge drive in the middle of the field from Tyler Webb (0-1) for his second career homer.
Chicago was still looking for its first success before Willson Contreras doubled up at Javier Báez at the start of the inning, setting the stage for Bote’s third homer of the season.
St. Louis wasted a great performance from Brad Miller, who made two homers and drove in three runs. Miller also had great success in Game 1, scoring a double from two draws in seventh place in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win.
Dexter Fowler connected for St. Louis in the opening of an unusual five-game streak, and Max Schrock reached his first career homer in Game 2.
Leading Cubs from NL Central ended a four-game crash. Duane Underwood Jr. (1-0) pitched 1 goalless and 1/3 innings for the win, and Jeremy Jeffress got three outs for his second save.
ASTRO 2, ROCKIES 1
HOUSTON (AP) – Carlos Correa led in two runs with a brace to support rookie Brandon Bielak’s good start, and Houston beat Colorado, extending his streak to five games.
Bielak (3-0) conceded a hit and run in six innings for victory in his third MLB start. He walked four and hit four.
Brooks Raley took over from Bielak and scored two in 1 1/3 innings. Josh James got the last two outs of the eighth before Blake Taylor conceded a hit in a goalless ninth for his first save.
The Rockies have lost four of their last five games and six of their last eight.
Denver star Kyle Freeland (2-1) produced seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts in six innings.
DODGERS 11, MARINERS 9
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Corey and Kyle Seager became the first siblings in 19 years to play as opponents in the same game, and Corey’s Dodgers rallied to beat Kyle and Seattle.
It was the tenth time in Major League history that the two opposing brothers went to the bottom of a game. The last time was on June 7, 2001, when the Crespos did it in San Francisco.
The teams combined for seven long balls,. Seattle’s Evan White played his first multi-homer game, going deep twice.
Corey Seager had two successes when the Dodgers won their sixth straight. He had a three-run drive on the right court during the second inning. Mookie Betts and Kiké Hernández also went deep for the Dodgers.
Kyle Seager had three hits and three RBI. After picking and scoring to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead in the first inning, he hit one of three homers during a third of five runs to help them regain the lead.
Kyle Lewis went home and had three wins for the Mariners. who lost six in a row and nine out of 11.
TWINS 4, ROYALS 1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Nelson Cruz made two homers, continuing his rise in the all-time rankings, and Minnesota beat Kansas City.
Devin Smeltzer (2-0) picked up the win in relief from opener Matt Wisler for Minnesota. Smeltzer conceded a hit in 2 2/3 innings as he hit three batters. The Twins have won three of four games in the series after being run over by the Royals in Kansas City last week.
Newcomer Kris Bubic (0-3) conceded two points over four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings for the Royals. Hunter Dozier made a home in the ninth inning to end Minnesota’s shutout offer.
Cruz overtook Duke Snider and equalized Mark Teixeira with his 409th career homer, good for an all-time 55th.
YANKEES 6, SOX RED 3
NEW YORK (AP) – Luke Voit made two homers, Aroldis Chapman returned from the COVID-19 injury list to pitch the ninth inning and New York beat Boston for the tenth consecutive game.
New York has finished a four-game streak and is on its best run against Boston since winning 12 consecutive franchise games in 1952-53, a time when Red Sox star Ted Williams was serving in the Korean War.
Boston lost its eighth consecutive game ever and also lost 10 consecutive games in the Bronx.
Thairo Estrada and Aaron Hicks also made it home to New York.
Boston southpaw Martin Pérez (2-3) took defeat.
Michael King (1-1) conceded a run out of three innings after replacing Luis Avilán.
ANGELS 7, GIANTS 6
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Tommy La Stella hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning, and the Angels got their losing streak of four with a win over San Francisco.
Mike Trout hit his 10th homer and Albert Pujols had a two-run double tiebreak, but the Angels still fell behind in the sixth inning. They didn’t rally until David Fletcher landed a single single in the ninth and La Stella threw the ball off the board over the right-field fence for his first career homer.
Trevor Gott (1-2) missed his third save opportunity. The Giants have scored a ninth inning lead for the third time in their last four games, and Gott has given up a ninth inning homer for the sixth time already this season.
Mike Yastrzemski got the go-ahead, two-run brace in the sixth inning for the Giants, who have lost five in a row. Brandon Belt hit a two-run first homer and Mauricio Dubón had two hits for the Giants, and their bullpen was solid until it was.
Ty Buttrey (1-0) pitched ninth place for Los Angeles.
DIAMONDBACKS 4, ATHLETICS 3
PHOENIX (AP) – David Peralta slapped a single loaded with bases across the right side of the infield with one knocked out in the ninth inning to push Arizona over Oakland.
The Diamondbacks have won their fifth straight game and are above .500 for the first time this season. They needed the ninth inning rally after losing a late lead.
A remained 3-1 down to eighth but returned to equalize after loading the bases with one eliminated.
Ahmed scored twice to start the decisive rally of the ninth inning. Kole Calhoun went on strike for the first outing, Ketel Mars followed with a single and the A intentionally walked Starling Mars to load the bases.
That matched left-handed reliever Jake Diekman against left-handed Peralta, who reached the plate and threw the ball across the right side of the infield.
Arizona star Zac Gallen took a no-hitter in sixth place in his twentieth career start. He gave up three hits, including Robbie Grossman’s solo humerus in the seventh. He eliminated eight, walked one and walked away with a 3-1 lead.
Stefan Crichton (2-0) earned the win with an inning of goalless relief. Joakim Soria (1-1) gave up Ahmed’s double to start the ninth.
METS 11, MARLINS 4
MIAMI (AP) – Robinson Cano and Pete Alonso hit two homers each to help the Mets beat Miami to a three-game losing streak.
Cano picked and hit a couple of homers in two runs to raise his batting average to .412. He and Alonso delivered back-to-back homers in the sixth inning for a 10-2 lead. Alonso also singled out in the third and homer in the fifth.
Nine of the Mets’ 14 hits have gone for extra bases. Chasen Shreve (1-0), the second of five Mets pitchers, retired all seven hitters he faced and knocked out five. Franklyn Kilome allowed two points in three innings for his first save.
Jonathan Villar hit his second homer for the Marlins. Jordan Yamamoto of Miami (0-1) conceded three points in 1 1/3 inning.
BLUE JAYS 7, ORIOLES 2
BALTIMORA (AP) – Hyun Jin Ryu pitched six innings of four-stroke ball, Randal Grichuk homed and led in four runs, and Toronto beat Baltimore.
Cavan Biggio also went deep for the Blue Jays and finished with three hits and three RBI.
Ryu (2-1) knocked out three and nobody walked. The southpaw allowed only one runner beyond second base and produced only one extra base hit.
Alex Cobb (1-2) gave up five runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. He hasn’t won in his last four starts.
Pedro Severino and Renato Núñez had RBI for the Orioles, who have lost two in a row after winning seven out of eight.
SOX WHITE 7, TIGERS 2
CHICAGO (AP) – Tim Anderson scored a couple of home runs, including his second in the lead against star Matthew Boyd in six days, and Chicago overtook Detroit.
According to STATS, Chicago became the first team in major league history to open two games in one season with home run-to-back from the same pitcher.
Luis Robert also scored two home runs for Chicago (12-11), who had six in the game and 10 in the last two. He has won for the fourth time in the last six attempts to climb past the .500 mark.
White Sox owner Gio Gonzalez has allowed two runs out of six hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings, but this season has remained winless. He scored 10, the fifteenth time he has hit double digits in his career.
Codi Heuer (1-0) pitched a goalless inning to secure the first league win.
The Tigers have lost the sixth in a row. In his major league debut, 21-year-old Issac Peredes had a two-run single in the fourth in four at-bats.
According to STATS, Chicago became the first team in major league history to open two games in one season with home run-to-back from the same pitcher.
