Bayern’s weaknesses that PSG must exploit in the final

Even if PSG delivered a very complete match against RB Leipzig (3-0), Bayern Munich can legitimately be considered as the favorite of the Champions League final (Sunday 23 August on RMC Sport 1, kick off dispatch at 9:00 p.m.).

The German club, defeated by Chelsea (3-0 then 4-1), FC Barcelona (8-2) and OL (3-0) by scoring at least three goals each time, have won all their matches up to ‘now. However, there are weaknesses that PSG could exploit.

A permeable defense

This is an observation that is not only established on the basis of the victory against Olympique Lyonnais, but also on the match against FC Barcelona. Obviously formidable in attack, Bayern Munich is also crumbly in defense.

This is particularly true on the left wing, behind the (very) offensive side Alphonso Davies and David Alaba, forced to help out in the axis when he is used to playing on the side. In general, the entire Bavarian defensive line is exposed, given their desire to play very high. “We necessarily leave spaces,” admitted Benjamin Pavard, this Wednesday evening at the microphone of RMC Sport.

This defect allowed OL to secure several chances, with ball calls from Memphis Depay and Karl Toko Ekambi. It took a perfect performance from Manuel Neuer and clumsiness on the part of the two Lyon strikers to prevent Bayern Munich from being punished. “If Mbappé, Neymar and Di Maria have so much space, it could wreak havoc,” said Jérôme Rothen, member of the Dream Team RMC Sport.

The medium exposed to intensity and breadth

Paris Saint-Germain will no doubt have noticed that the intensity of Olympique Lyonnais in the first quarter of an hour destabilized Bayern Munich. “It was difficult to play against a team that runs a lot,” admitted coach Hansi Flick. “Lyon put a lot of pressure on us,” also commented double scorer Serge Gnabry.

The game also showed that Bayern Munich tend to leave a lot of space between their lines. Which can put his Goretzka-Alcantara pair in difficulty in midfield, especially when the game goes to the sides. “They can be taken across the board,” Rudi Garcia recalled after the match. “Small tactical lacks” which, according to Jérôme Rothen, could pose a problem for them to “recover” balloons. But it will undoubtedly be necessary for the trio of Parisian circles to be as compact and efficient as it was against Leipzig.
