A merciless beating for the team of Quique Sétien, who still started with a reinforced midfield to absorb Bayern. Forward Antoine Griezmann was victimized, De Jong was flanked in midfield by Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Arturo Vidal.
Spectacle in opening phase
With two goals in the first seven minutes, the game immediately broke out completely. Thomas Müller already signed for the 1-0 after four minutes, by striking after a good combination with Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona responded quickly, although it was helped by David Alaba. After Jordi Alba was sent into the deep, the left back saw his cross on Luis Suarez by Alaba past Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Suarez could have taken Barcelona ahead two minutes later, but the Uruguayan – beautifully released by Nelson Semedo – ran into Neuer. Lionel Messi hit the post from the subsequent corner kick. The Argentinian was again close to a Catalan lead halfway through the first half, but after a nice solo, the captain shot in too softly to surprise Neuer.
Barça is stacking wrong after wrong
And after that, Bayern took control of the game and took full advantage of the countless misses in the Barcelona defense. After Semedo got Roberto in trouble with a hospital ball, Serge Gnabry launched Ivan Perisic and the Croat hit hard through the foot of Marc-André ter Stegen. Just recovering from that deficit, Gnabry made the damage for Barça even greater, by breaking away from Clement Lenglet after a great pass from Leon Goretzka and firing in the 3-1 hard.
Almost immediately from kick-off, Ter Stegen delivered the ball to Lewandowski, but the goalie prevented the Pool from bringing the margin to three. Two minutes later, Müller did, however, by shooting a cross from Joshua Kimmich hard at the first post. Barça, for example, went into halftime with a 4-1 deficit, never before has the club conceded four goals in one half in the Champions League.
Suarez brings back hope
Suarez could have made the score even more bearable shortly before half-time, but could not surprise Neuer with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. With Griezmann in the team, Suarez succeeded ten minutes after the break. Barca’s number 9 was unlocked by Alba, passed Jerome Boateng and hit the far corner.
But where the neutral football fans still hoped for an exciting second half, Bayern threw the game in the slot six minutes after Suarez’s connection goal. A great action from left back Alphonso Davies was rounded off by right back Kimmich: 5-2 and the game was decided. Lewandowski headed the 6-2 in the final phase and Philippe Coutinho, the mercenary from Barcelona who came in at Bayern, lifted the score to 8-2 with two goals in the last minutes. A humiliation to the bone for Barça.
Semi finals
De Jong was allowed to complete the ninety minutes, but it was the last of his first season in the service of Barcelona, which has now been completed. Bayern Munich will compete in the semi-final on Wednesday against the winner of the match between Olympique Lyon and Manchester City.
