It looks like the Chicago Bears are getting proactive in their quest for more depth in the quarterback. This shouldn’t be a big surprise. Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles have a history of injury. Combine that with the risk of COVID-19 infection? It would make perfect sense to add a fourth QB to the mix alongside Tyler Bray.
A few days ago, it became known that the team was flying to North Texas, Mason Fine, for a test. Fine threw over 12,000 yards in college and had a reputation for delivering in many big games despite his small size. However, he may not be the only one there. The Bears could also be looking for a veteran option.
The team is also rumored to bring Kyle Sloter in for a try. An undrafted free agent in 2017, he served as a backup for the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons before joining the Detroit Lions in 2019. During that time, he built a reputation as a preseason superstar but didn’t. has not yet had the opportunity to play.

Sloter is a fascinating story. He hasn’t thrown a single pass in two years for the southern Mississippi. At one point, they even tried to move it to the wide receiver. Then he was transferred to northern Colorado where he only became the starter in his senior season. He threw over 2,600 yards with 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Quite impressive for his first real playing time since graduating high school.
In his last two preseason runs, he’s been lit with 809 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception on 98 passes. He has size, a strong arm and throws with solid precision. He was also fortunate to learn from some very good coaches including Pat Shurmur and Darrell Bevell.
The man who could have pushed the Bears to bring him in is quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. The two worked together in 2018 when the coach was Minnesota’s offensive coordinator.
