Belgian cycling talent Remco Evenepoel experienced a horror accident at the end of the Around Lombardy race when he accidentally fell off a bridge. One of the favorites of the prestigious race failed the technical descent, crashed into a stone wall and fell from a bridge into a ravine. According to the RAI television station, the 20-year-old rider was conscious. Paramedics put on a protective collar and took him to the hospital by ambulance.
Evenepoel, who with nine triumphs is the most successful cyclist so far this season, which was disrupted by coronavirus, crashed less than 50 kilometers before the finish. In a group of refugees, he prosecuted Italian Vincenzo Nibali in the congress.
Four riders Jan Bakelants, Laurens de Plus, Simone Petilli and Daniel Martínez were injured in another passage of a challenging descent from Sormano hill three years ago.
The winner of the race Around Lombardy was the Danish cyclist Jakob Fuglsang. He won half a minute ahead of New Zealander George Bennett.
