Two equal breaks in the opening round of the Michigan women’s amateur golf championship

Spring Lake’s Anna Kramer shot 2-under-par 70 on Saturday in the first round of the Michigan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship to take a lead on Traverse City’s Anika Dy at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

Kerrigan Parks of Flushing, the 2018 champion who won the West Virginia women’s state last week, got two shots after equaling 72 with par while four players who included 19-time GAM champion Stacy Slobodnik -Stoll – the Michigan State female golf coach – were tied for the fourth at 73.

Kramer, who plays at the University of Indianapolis, made three birds against one cart.

“I just had a bad hole and this was due to one bad hit in a bunker hit which was still difficult with the kind of lie I had,” said Kramer. “I hit the irons and wedges quite well. I could have done a few more putts, but I was a bit lucky in points with my driver in front too.

“Overall it was a solid start.”

Dy, who plays for the University of Michigan, is the reigning champion of the Michigan PGA Women’s Open. He made three birds and two carts.

“I dropped my T shot on my first hole (par 3 # 10) in the bunker, and then I hit it again in the bunker on the 11th,” he said. “I saved the parity on both, but it seemed to me that for the rest of the day I was playing safely, not looking for pins at all, hitting only in the middle of the greens and paying attention.”

Parks, the female GAM of the year 2018 player, plays at Marshall University.

She won the state of West Virginia with 15 hits last week and had no plans to play in Michigan until she returned home to Flushing on Friday evening and went on the pitch when Canton’s Katie Chipman retired due to a disease.

The parks made three birds and three carts.

After the second round on Sunday, the field will be cut to the 32 low players who will enter the game starting on Monday. The semifinals and the championship game will be contested on Wednesday.

Tee times and scores are available on the Golf Association of Michigan website.
