Toni Kroos reveals how close he came to a Manchester United move

Toni Kroos revealed that the possibility of moving to Real Madrid was the only thing that prevented him from moving to Manchester United in 2014.

After six years in the Bayern Munich first team it became clear that Kroos was due to leave the Allianz Arena that summer before taking part in the World Cup.

David Moyes was strongly tied to a move for the German midfielder at Manchester United, but the Scot was fired before the end of the season and the move never happened. Kroos has now revealed how close he was to moving to Old Trafford.

“Manchester had a lot of interest in me before the World Cup and a deal was close,” Real’s midfielder told Lauschangriff Podcast.

“Then my agent called me and told me about Real Madrid, and when Real Madrid appears you put Manchester behind them in the line.

“At the World Cup Joachim Low asked me if I was leaving for Madrid, so I told him and he was happy for me to negotiate during the tournament.”

Previously it was rumored that Louis Van Gaal, Moyes’s replacement, had decided not to sign Kroos, but the midfielder’s opinion is clearly that of making the decision.

He moved to Bernabeu for about € 30 million, with the transfer made official only four days after Kroos and his compatriots won the World Cup.

He has continued to play 277 games for Los Blancos so far and has won three Champions League titles and two La Liga titles, as well as some other cup competitions.

United on the other hand have won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup once since, showing that Kroos could have been right.

The thirty-year-old took him in a good mood and simply replied asking him not to tell anyone.

He probably would have had a lot more abuse if he moved to Old Trafford instead of Bernabeu, and ended up with far fewer titles in his name.
