The Spanish Grand Prix, «event of public interest»

Formula 1 sneaked into the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, and not precisely (or not, a priori) due to the return of Fernando Alonso. The Minister Spokesperson, María Jesús Montero, confirmed the decision to declare the Spanish Grand Prix how “Public interest event”, within the measures that have been adopted in different cultural fields to help them with the economic upscaling.

“It is a decision that will provide an impetus to an event that has special significance on the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit,” he explained of the appointment to be held between August 14 and 16. This news has a direct implication in the way of following the race: by law, the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix it will have to be broadcast on open television, although Movistar F1 remains as the channel that holds the broadcasting rights.

Everything points to the fact that the public entity, RTVE, will be in charge of this live broadcast, as they did in 2017 for the last time. The news will mean great advertising boost for the circuit, which is in full negotiations to maintain its continuity in the Formula 1 calendar from 2021.
