Tammy Abraham signs the extension of the Chelsea contract

Tammy Abraham has eliminated any worries about his future in Chelsea by signing an extension of the one-year contract at Stamford Bridge, the PA news agency understands.

The 22-year-old forward has extended his Blues deal until 2023, although Chelsea bosses are ready to continue long-term talks.

Boss Frank Lampard gave Abraham the coveted jersey number nine last summer and the English striker fired 16 goals in 40 games in his first term at the head of the Blues line.

The new £ 53 million recruit Timo Werner will increase Chelsea’s firepower next term, but the prolific German assassin will also add significant competition to Abraham.

But Camberwell-born striker Abraham had no qualms about extending his stay at Stamford Bridge, with the club also keen to keep him for the long haul.

“I don’t want to get into contract terms, this could open me up to many questions than one,” said Lampard.

“But I said it before when I was asked, Tammy is not in a critical phase of his contract.

“He has to focus on his playing and we have to end the season as hard as possible, and there will be plenty of time to sit down later.”

French World Cup winner Olivier Giroud has also recently extended his Blues contract to stay in West London for the next term.

The 33-year-old has scored three goals in five games since football resumed, reaffirming his value to the Blues.

Abraham broke a duck by scoring 10 games in Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Crystal Palace on Tuesday, with Lampard hoping he can get him back to his best.

“Tammy is a very positive guy in his personality, he trains well, he’s good at the group and that hasn’t changed,” said Lampard.

“I know beyond that there are sometimes feelings for a player, especially a scorer who is going through a difficult time in front of the goal.

“We had a conversation before the game at Palace, so I was particularly happy to see him break it against them. I hope there is an improvement for him, I hope that his confidence has had a good boost and we will see. “
