Schürrle (29) baffles Germany with football pension: ‘no more applause needed’

André Schurrle (29) immediately ends his career. The German hero of the 2014 World Cup says he no longer needs applause.

This week, Schürrle’s ongoing contract with Borussia Dortmund was terminated. He seemed to be looking for a new club, but nothing could be further from the truth: Germany’s 57-time international has had enough and ends immediately.

“I have thought about this decision for a long time,” Schürrle explains in conversation with Der Spiegel. “But it is clear to me: I no longer need applause.”

Schürrle immortalized himself in Germany by assisting Mario Götze’s winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final. He played six of the seven games in Brazil, scoring once in the eighth final against Algeria and twice in the historic 1-7 against Brazil.

In recent years, Schürrle, who also played with FSV Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea, was rented out by Dortmund to Spartak Moscow and Fulham. Striking: Götze has recently also become transfer-free, after his contract with BVB expired.
