Safeway Open officials confirmed Wednesday that conducting the 10-13 September event with fans “is not a possibility in the current healthcare climate.” The news was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

“The health and safety of the Napa community, as well as our players, volunteers and partners, remained of the utmost importance during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said tournament executive director Jeff Sanders.

“We are disappointed to announce that we will not be able to host our tremendous fans during this year’s event and will continue to work closely with the PGA TOUR and with local, state and federal agencies to ensure the well-being of all who are admitted on site during the week of the tournament “.

The next event on the United States golf calendar that has not yet made a decision about participation in person is the US Open at Winged Foot, scheduled for September 17-20, the week after Safeway.

Last week, the Ryder Cup, originally scheduled for the week after the US Open, was officially postponed to 2021, with tournament officials deciding not to run the event without fans.

The Associated Press Tuesday reported that the Tour is looking to move its Asian Swing to three events in locations in the western United States.
