Report: Chiefs sign Chris Jones for a new contract

According to a report by Chris Mortenson from ESPN, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed a long-term contract with Chris Jones.

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, it is a four-year contract.

NFL network insider Ian Rapoport says the deal is worth $ 85 million, including a $ 65 million guarantee.

The Spotrac salary cap weighed in a quick context.

And then some additional details that were first reported by Schefter.

The 26-year-old Jones is now on the team until the 2023 season – and once the details of the contract structure are fully known, the new deal will undoubtedly bring much-needed relief to the chiefs in 2020 salary cap.

With just over 24 hours ahead of Wednesday’s 3pm (Arrowhead Time) NFL date, Jones is now the only franchise or transition tag player in the league to sign a new contract.

The team has seen Jones’ deal as one of his priorities since the end of the 2018 season. But a year ago other things kept bothering – like the drama about the wide receiver Tyreek Hill, the trade with the defensive end Frank Clark and the signing of security by tyrant Mathieu as a free agent. As it turned out, all three players played an important role in the team’s Super Bowl LIV win 2019 – the first of the chiefs since the 1969 season.

Trading with Clark was generally seen as an indicator that the Chiefs might move from Jones after the coming season, but this signing makes it clear that the team has always wanted both Clark and Jones on the squad.

Jones also had to wait for his turn when the Chiefs closed their deal to extend quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But as it turned out, Mahome’s $ 503 million 12-year contract (signed just over a week ago) had to be signed first. Despite its record-breaking numbers, the deal left Mahomes’ salary caps practically unchanged for 2020 and 2021, allowing the chiefs with the cap to close the deal with Jones.

Run. It. Back.
