Qatar plans to apply for the 2032 Olympic Games

DThe Arab Gulf Emirate Qatar wants to apply to host the 2032 Olympic Games. Qatar has written an official letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to show interest in hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games from 2032, Qatar’s National Olympic Committee said on Monday.

In a “meaningful dialogue” with the IOC, it should now become clear “how the Olympic Games can support Qatar’s long-term development goals,” said Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. Qatar’s applications for the 2016 and 2020 games had not been approved.

Qatar would thus be a possible opponent of a German application for the games. The Rhine-Ruhr region is currently positioning itself for the 2032 Summer Games. Brisbane / Australia is considered to be the most promising prospect. India has also already expressed an interest in holding it.

“Never before have Olympic Games been held in the Middle East,” the Qatar NOK said. “For many years, sport has been a decisive factor in the development of our nation.” The rich golf emirate is the venue for the 2022 World Cup.

The World Athletics Championships were held in Qatar last year. The event had generated a lot of international criticism in 2019, given the initially empty stadium and the high temperatures that had affected competitions for walkers and marathon runners. The state has been criticized for years due to the working conditions on the stadium construction sites and the human rights situation.
