Despite a global pandemic, the PGA championship course will feature 96 of the world’s top 100 players.
Only four of the top 100 players are missing from the list of published fields: n. 36 Lee Westwood, no. 50 Shugo Imahira, n. 76 Thomas Pieters and n. 89 Eddie Pepperell.
Westwood, who is mildly asthmatic, told reporters last week to the British Masters that he was not traveling to the United States for the PGA because “he was even more concerned that America would not take (coronavirus) as seriously as the rest of the world.” Pepperell expressed concern about travel and said he would prefer to prioritize the British swing of the European Tour over an important championship.
The PGA will begin on August 6 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. No fans will be allowed to participate, with only limited staff on site.
Last year, for the first time, the PGA had to host all of the top 100 before Justin Thomas retired due to a wrist injury.
Troy Merritt, Talor Gooch and Russell Henley are the top three players on the alternative list, respectively.
