Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, announced on Monday that it might also host the Olympic Games, possibly in 2032.

The Gulf Arab State Olympic Committee has told the International Olympic Committee to join the “continuous dialogue” phase on the direction of future games.

Qatar is increasingly interested in hosting major sporting events and hosted the World Athletics Championships in 2019.

“This proven track record, wealth of experience and our desire to use sport to promote peace and cultural exchange form the basis for our discussions with the Commission,” said Qatar Olympic Committee President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa said al-Thani in a statement.

The Olympic Games have never been hosted in the Middle East, and Qatar will be the first nation in the region to host football’s biggest flagship project.

It has invested billions of dollars in preparing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, human rights groups have criticized the treatment of migrant workers.

The government of Qatar has stated that it does not tolerate unscrupulous treatment for workers.

The IOC could not be reached immediately for comment.
