Oliver Reck criticizes football and understands Schürrle’s resignation

Dhe former Bundesliga goalkeeper Oliver Reck has criticized the excesses of professional football. “I always say: This is the biggest whore business there is,” said the 55-year-old in the Spotify podcast from “In the head of the trainer”. “I just believe,” explained the former goalkeeper of Werder Bremen and Schalke 04, “that there are so many intrigues being spun or that some people are pushing themselves into the foreground or being asked where they ask themselves: How can this happen?”

Reck made 457 appearances in the Bundesliga for Bremen (345 games) and Schalke (112) and was twice German champions with the Bremen team. He also played an international match for the German national team. After his active time the coaching career started. After several seasons as goalkeeper coach at Schalke 04, he was head coach at MSV Duisburg, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Kickers Offenbach. He is currently training the regional league club SSV Jeddeloh.

He did not want to get involved in the negative aspects, “but I go my way, I already went as a player,” said Reck. “I will also go as a coach and I will continue to do so for the next few years as long as I am in this business.” Therefore Reck cannot understand the critical words about the early career end of the former world champion André Schürrle. “Then everyone has to accept it that way,” complained the former keeper. “He’ll know what he’s doing. Life doesn’t end for him at the age of 29. Maybe it’s just starting now. ”

Schürrle ended his career in mid-July at the age of only 29. He also addressed the public pressure in emotional terms. In the football business, “only the performance on the court counts,” he told the “Spiegel”. “Vulnerability and weakness should not exist at any time.” Schürrle had played in the Bundesliga for Mainz 05, Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, as well as for Chelsea and FC Fulham in the Premier League. Most recently, he was loaned to Spartak Moscow.
