Ex-NFL Star Dana stubblefield was convicted of raping a mentally disabled woman following a 2015 incident … and he now faces life imprisonment.
Stubblefield, 49, was first arrested in May 2016 after officials said the former 49ers superstar raped a woman he found at a childcare site and invited to her home in Santa Clara, Calif., for a job interview.
Stubblefield had argued that sex was consensual – and claimed he could prove it with a lie detector test.
It was initially hit with 5 crimes – but in January 2018, prosecutors uncovered evidence they said proved Stubblefield had used a gun to commit the alleged rape. The bail was revoked and he was remanded in custody.
He spent the following weeks locked up in the Santa Clara County jail.
The case ultimately went to a jury – and on Monday, after a 9-month trial, Stubblefield was formally convicted of forcible rape using a gun. He now faces 15 years in prison for life.
Stubblefield was a first-round pick in the 1993 NFL Draft and went on to make 3 Pro Bowls. He was a key part of the 1994 49ers team that beat the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.
In 2016, Stubblefield attorney Ken Rosenfeld told TMZ Sports the the accuser was lying in an apparent shakedown.
“Dana Stubblefield is being unfairly targeted because of her fame and wealth by someone who is fully motivated to lie,” Rosenfeld told us at the time.
“The clear motivation here is money.”
Stubblefield was remanded in custody after the verdict was read. His next hearing will take place on August 29.
Stubblefield was married at the time of the incident – but his wife filed for divorce just before the rape allegations were made public. They have 2 children together.
