Four new Nashville SC players have contracted the Covid-19, Athletic news site reported on Wednesday, raising questions about the team’s place in the North American Championship (MSL) when competition resumes. If the information is confirmed, this will bring to nine the number of players on the team who tested positive for the new coronavirus. The first five cases were confirmed on Tuesday. MSL and Nashville SC were not immediately available to respond to this information. The club’s scheduled opening game against the Chicago Fire on Wednesday was postponed from Tuesday.
Nashville SC said the league “would continue to assess the club’s participation in the tournament based on the results of the additional tests.” This was another blow to the resumption of MLS, a day after FC Dallas had to withdraw from the tournament, 11 club members – ten players and a coach – having tested positive for coronavirus. Last season’s best player Carlos Vela will not be traveling with his Los Angeles FC team. MLS, suspended after two days in mid-March, is set to resume on Wednesday in a format similar to the World Cup, with group stage and knockout stages, in a “bubble” at Disney World in Orlando.
