Mikel Arteta offers explanations as to why Arsenal continue to concede late goals

Mikel Arteta believes that fatigue or lack of concentration are the reason Arsenal have conceded a late goal in the last two games.

The Gunners looked ready for a point in the North London derby against Tottenham on Sunday, after Alexandre Lacazette and Son Heung-min exchanged goals in the first half.

But Toby Alderweireld rose higher to nod in Son’s eighth-minute corner and see Spurs jump Arsenal into eighth place in the Premier League.

That late punch came five days after Jamie Vardy had wiped out an 84th minute equalizer for Leicester in the Emirates.

And after those two late goals of losing points, both in a winning position, Arteta looked at why it continues to happen.

“It could be tired,” said Arteta. “We have a few moments when it wasn’t about that, it was about attention, individual mistakes or sometimes the opponent pushes you in the last 10 minutes.

“There were various things that cost us games. Sometimes mistakes, sometimes game management. The margin is a lot, at the moment we have to improve.

“The first goal in a big game is so important and it gives effects [us]. In the second half we modified some things and attacked better but we conceded.

“Individual mistakes are mentally difficult. It affects all the mood. We went back to the second half but in an isolated action we gave the set and we have to learn. I’m sure we can get there and I’m sorry for the fans. We know how much it means to them “.

“We can do more and exploit spaces better than we do. Attacking 10 players continuously is not easy.”
