Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to secure Paul Pogba’s long-term future for the club

Manchester United head Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to secure Paul Pogba’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, it appeared that the French midfielder was due to leave United this summer.

The 27-year-old World Cup winner has been linked with moves to both his former Juventus team and Real Madrid.

However, Pogba, now recovering from the injury, has established an impressive relationship with Bruno Fernandes as United approaches a place in the Champions League.

Pogba’s current deal expires in 12 months, but United have the option to extend it for another season.

And, after Nemanja Matic followed Scott McTominay into signing a long-term deal, Solskjaer also wants Pogba, who has been injured for much of this campaign, to commit himself to the club.

“Obviously we want to keep the best players in the club and we hope we can do something about it,” said Solskjaer.

“We want to build a team for the future. We have assured one at the beginning and another who is really experienced. But we also need players in the mid-range group.

“Ever since Paul came back, he’s been getting better. He’s enjoying his football, so let’s see where it takes us.”

Solskjaer is expected to shop this summer, with Borussia Dortmund international Jadon Sancho among the players he is keeping an eye on.

However, Dortmund’s pre-coronavirus estimate above £ 100 million does not match Solskjaer’s vision of the summer market.

“The whole world has changed both financially and the perception we have of values,” added the Norwegian.

“Every time I put the case in front of Ed [Woodward – the club’s executive vice-chairman], I think it is reasonable and realistic. I’ve always had the club in my head.

“I don’t think short term, I always think long term and I try to do good business. I am always careful enough with money.”
