Manchester United equaled the Premier League record after Aston Villa’s victory

Manchester United equaled the Premier League record for penalties in one season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side continued their impressive form journey with a comfortable 3-0 win over Aston Villa in Villa Park.

Despite a regular start at Villa Park, the hosts were left behind when Bruno Fernandes converted from the penalty spot.

Fernandes was shot down by Ezri Konsa after turning just inside the box, and Jonathan Moss indicated the free kick after a VAR review.

Following the penalty award, United were awarded the highest number of joint penalties in a 38-game season in the history of the Premier League.

The Old Trafford club is now up to Leicester City from the 2015/16 season and Crystal Palace from the 2004/05 campaign.

United have received 13 of the 79 penalties imposed in this season’s Premier League, representing 16.5 percent of the penalties imposed.

“We knew we could have a penalty against and we were very careful,” said Spurs boss Jose Mourinho after his team’s draw against United in June.

“We know that Manchester United have an incredible record of penalties this season and we knew that everything in the box was very dangerous for us.

“We had to be very careful, we were ready to block every blow with the hands behind the body. We knew it could happen.

“I think referee Jonathan’s first penalty made this decision, which I admit is difficult for the referees. So the VAR is a different story.

“Referees can make mistakes, but I don’t think VAR should make mistakes. So the second penalty is unbelievable for me. It is a foul on Serge Aurier that should kill the situation.

“So it’s a foul in the box and I feel that when VAR goes for the simulation the player should be exposed and get a yellow card. But this did not happen.

“I feel really angry with these two decisions, but it’s true.”
