Man Utd confirms that Angel Gomes exits after the midfielder fails to agree on a new contract

The teenager has refused to sign a new deal at Old Trafford and is now free to seek a new club

Manchester United released midfielder Angel Gomes with a free transfer, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Gomes, 19, started training with the United States Academy at the age of six and made his first team debut towards the end of the 2016-17 season, becoming the club’s youngest debutant from Duncan Edwards in 1953.

But the young man struggled to find regular football at Old Trafford, making only a handful of senior appearances and failing to score a single goal.

His contract with the Red Devils expired on June 30 and the club has now revealed that he has chosen to pursue his career elsewhere.

“Manchester United can confirm that Angel Gomes has not accepted the offer of a new contract and therefore has left the club,” United said in a note released Wednesday.

“The nineteen year old joined the Reds at a young age and made his way through the ranks before becoming the first player born in the 2000s to represent the first team, replacing Wayne Rooney in the last game of the 2016-17 season, against the Crystal Palace.

“It means he has become the youngest player since Duncan Edwards made his senior debut for the club, immediately after receiving the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

“The offensive midfielder has scored 10 appearances in total for the Reds – three of which have started, all in the Europa League this season.

“His final exit came in Norwich City’s 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford in the Premier League in January.

“Everyone at Manchester United would like to wish Angel the best of luck in the future and thank him for his efforts for the club.”

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that Gomes could leave in late June, as the dispute continued between player and club over his new deal.

“I have no news, nothing, so it doesn’t seem like that,” Solskjaer told reporters when asked about the possibility of an extension of the contract.

“I have no news from them last night or this morning, it seems that they have not been able to agree, so the answer is probably short and yes, then.”
