Kumar Sangakkara asked for an explanation in Sri Lanka’s 2011 World Cup investigation: reports

Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was asked to record his statement in front of a special Ministry of Sports investigation unit that investigated allegations that the country’s defeat at the 2011 World Cup against India was being resolved, local media reported here.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Sports ordered an investigation last month into ex-Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s allegation that the cricket team’s defeat in the 2011 World Cup final by “certain parties” had been remedied by India.

Sangakkara was captain of the Sri Lankan team at that time.

According to the local newspaper ‘Daily Mirror’ quoting SSP WAJH Fonseka, a special investigative department at the Ministry of Sport asked Sangakkara to record his statement.

According to the report, Sangakkara was asked to appear in front of the unit at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

The unit also recorded statements by Sri Lankan strike legend Aravinda De Silva, who was chairman of the selection committee at the time, and the game’s opening batsman, Upul Tharanga.

On June 24, the special investigation department made a statement from Aluthgamage, who said that his early claim was indeed a suspect that he would like to investigate thoroughly.
